Recipe Corner: Veggie Hoppin’ John
Hoppin' John, also known as Carolina Rice and Peas, is a classic recipe with origins in the Southern US, and a mixture of African, French, and Caribbean roots. There are many variations on the dish, but its main components are often black-eyed peas, rice, and meat such as spicy sausage. The recipe first appeared in print in 1847 but is said to have originated long before from enslaved Africans on rice plantations, who brought over Cowpeas (also known as Black Eyed Peas) from West Africa. It is also often made on New Year's to bring good luck to the next year. Here is a vegetable-full version to enjoy as Black History Month comes to an end!
SNAP/EBT Workshop
A reminder for the upcoming SNAP/EBT workshop happening next week!
Could you use an extra ~$250 per month for groceries? You may be eligible to receive SNAP dollars for groceries! We're experiencing a moment in time where more people are eligible to receive SNAP due to Covid expansion policies. OSA will be hosting a SNAP/EBT workshop to inform students of SNAP benefits. Caseworkers from Tompkins County will be present to provide guidance for your application.
The workshop will be held on March 9th from 5-6 pm :)
We hope to see you all in the store starting on Thursday! Happy March!
