Anabel’s Class (AEM 3385)
With pre-enroll right around the corner, we wanted to mention that the Anabel’s Grocery class is available in the spring (and the fall for future planning)!
Here are a couple of thoughts from students currently in the class:
“I am a junior studying International Agriculture and Rural Development with a concentration in Agricultural Science and Food Systems! I took the Anabel’s class this semester because I wanted to be a part of a group that is making a tangible difference on campus… our food system is very fraught and broken, so being part of a group like Anabel’s gives me hope for a brighter, healthier future! In class, I’ve been very interested in learning more about the intersection of capitalism and racism within the food system, and working in the store is always a highlight of my week. I love interacting with the larger Anabel’s community, and seeing how happy the store makes people feel!”
- Claire de Cova
“Working at the store has allowed me to meet and chat with all sorts of people on campus that I would usually never be able to see. There's just such a friendly atmosphere to the Anabel's store and you really feel like you're part of a community. I've also really enjoyed how the class has both the practical side of the grocery store, as well as the more political/social justice related side of the discussions”
- Eric Dong
“Sometimes classes are described as having one direction of flow, from professor to student, like how water flows from raincloud to ground. In this scenario I am scrambling together, I’d say Anabel’s is a water park. You’ve got the water going every which way at people: a kid in the tube going up and down in the wave pool, toddler trapped by fear under the mushroom umbrella, logical person unable to the navigate the lazy river, and whatever other water park structure fits the idea. Basically imagine yourself as everyone in that water park.
You’ll end up splashed, as water hits you from every direction, but that’s the goal isn’t it. At Anabel’s I learned so much from my peers and professor as we discussed in class, from my coworkers as we dealt with on the job problems, and from students passionate about this organization. I can’t recommend it enough.”- Kathryn Marini

Hudson UP
HudsonUP is providing $500 each month to selected Hudson residents over a period of 5 years. The program has been designed to benefit the Hudson community and demonstrate the power of basic income for all. For one year, we have had 25 participants, and now we’re adding an additional 50 to cover over 1% of Hudson’s population. We believe strongly that Universal Basic Income (UBI) is going to be a (if not the) pivotal tool in ending poverty in a dignified way.
Join this live session to learn about why we need UBI and how our community-driven model has impacted Hudson.
